I know it sounds crazy, but I don’t shake hands with my customers. Especially strangers. Especially when I’m in the store alone.
I just had a customer get really bent out of shape about it. He offered his hand to me in greeting.
Mind you, I just got through explaining he couldn’t buy beer, not until 6 a.m. (State Law). Before that point, there had been no such salutations.
But then my not accepting this ‘courtesy’, he took it as a sign of disrespect. He demanded an explanation.
I didn’t go deep into it, but it was a textbook example of someone who only considers their outlook and world impact and not someone else’s.
Offering to shake hands is just that, an offer. Not all offers must be accepted. In fact, to expect acceptance of said offer brings the spirit of the offer into question.
I do shake hands. With strangers, even. Just not at work. Not when I’m busy minding someone else’s property. And my own safety.
